A cold shoulder
Meaning
To intentionally ignore someone or treat them in an unfriendly or dismissive manner.
Origin
In the grand halls of medieval castles, hospitality was paramount, but even the warmest welcome had its limits. When a guest had lingered too long, or perhaps proven unwelcome, a subtle signal was needed to convey their host's dwindling patience. Instead of a fresh, hot roast, the unwanted visitor might find themselves served a "cold shoulder of mutton"—a less desirable, reheated, or even unheated cut of meat. This stark culinary downgrade was a clear, if unspoken, message: the warmth of their welcome had vanished, much like the steam from their meal. Though other theories suggest a simpler origin in the literal act of turning one's back, this evocative image of a host's calculated culinary snub has persisted, perfectly capturing the chill of intentional social distance.
