Origin
The word "guru" traces its roots directly back to Sanskrit, an ancient Indo-Aryan language from India, where it literally means "teacher" or "spiritual guide." In Hinduism, a guru is a revered figure who dispels spiritual darkness (gu) with the light of knowledge (ru), guiding disciples towards enlightenment. When the British Raj brought India into greater contact with the Western world, the term slowly seeped into English, initially retaining its spiritual connotations.
