The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

An eavesdropper

Meaning

A person who secretly listens to the private conversations of others.

Origin

The phrase "an eavesdropper" has a wonderfully architectural and illicit origin. In medieval times, houses often featured overhanging roofs called "eaves" which channeled rainwater away from the walls. The area directly beneath where the water dripped was known as the "eavesdrip." If you wanted to discreetly listen to conversations happening inside, or just outside an open window, the perfect spot was to stand in this shadowy, wet eavesdrip. You could blend in, and the sound of dripping water might even mask your presence. This literal act of standing in the 'eavesdrip' to illegally or secretly listen is where the term flowed from, evolving to describe not just the act, but the person who engaged in such clandestine listening, turning a physical location into a vivid descriptor for a nosey individual.

Examples
