The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

Anorexic

Meaning

Describing a person suffering from anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder characterized by an obsessive fear of gaining weight, a distorted body image, and self-starvation.

Origin

The word "anorexic" traces its linguistic roots to ancient Greek, combining "an-" (meaning "without" or "lack of") and "orexis" (referring to "appetite" or "desire"). Thus, it literally meant "without appetite." However, this ancient etymology merely described a physical symptom, not the complex psychological condition we recognize today. It wasn't until the 19th century that British physician William Gull, in 1873, formally identified and named "anorexia nervosa," meticulously documenting the severe self-starvation and distorted body image that characterized the illness. His groundbreaking work distinguished it from other forms of malnourishment, elevating a symptom into a recognized medical and psychological disorder, and thereby giving "anorexic" its modern, specific meaning in describing those afflicted.
