Origin
The phrase springs directly from the pages of Charles Dickens' classic novel, Oliver Twist, first published in serialized form between 1837 and 1839. Jack Dawkins, better known as the Artful Dodger, is a street-smart, cunning pickpocket, one of Fagin's gang. He's a charismatic, sharply dressed boy who effortlessly evades capture and consequences, often with a cheeky grin. Dickens painted him as a master of subterfuge, a quick-witted rogue who could "dodge" any sticky situation with "artful" skill. His memorable portrayal cemented the character in the public consciousness, and his nickname quickly became shorthand for anyone demonstrating similar cleverness in evading responsibility or trouble.
