The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

cakewalk

Meaning

Something that is extremely easy to accomplish, requiring little to no effort.

Origin

The term 'cakewalk' originates from a distinctive dance created by enslaved African Americans on plantations in the American South during the 19th century. Initially, the dance was a satiric imitation of the elaborate, formal European ballroom dances performed by their white enslavers. Couples would perform exaggerated, high-stepping promenades and elegant bows, often competing for a cake as a prize, hence the name 'cakewalk'. This ironic dance, where enslaved people subtly mocked their masters, eventually became a popular social dance and later a staple in minstrel shows. The concept of winning a prize (a cake) for a seemingly effortless or enjoyable performance evolved into the figurative meaning of something being remarkably easy to achieve.
