Imagine the smoky, tense atmosphere of a 19th-century card game. Fortunes could be made or lost in a single hand, and the stakes were often dangerously high. Amidst the shuffling and dealing, a dishonest player might slyly tuck an advantageous card—an ace, perhaps, or a king—into the wide, flowing sleeve of their coat. Then, at a critical moment, when the game demanded it most, they'd subtly slip that hidden card into play, turning the tide of the game with a secret weapon no one else suspected. This literal act of subterfuge from the card table soon became a vivid metaphor, giving us the enduring phrase for any secret advantage or plan held back until the perfect moment.
