Origin

The word 'cover' has deep roots, stretching back through Old French 'covrir' to Latin 'cooperire,' meaning 'to wholly cover.' Initially, it evoked a physical act: putting a lid on a pot, spreading a blanket, or hiding something from view. But language, ever adaptable, soon began to stretch its meanings. A hunter might 'cover' ground, a journalist might 'cover' a story, or a soldier might 'cover' their comrades—each implying a responsibility, an inclusion, or a protective embrace over an area or topic. This metaphorical extension solidified in the modern era, particularly in business and administration, to describe the specific remit or responsibilities of a person, department, or agreement, as if drawing an invisible boundary around its domain.
