The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

Digital native

Meaning

A person who has grown up in the digital age and is therefore familiar with computers and the Internet from an early age.

Origin

The term "digital native" was coined by educational consultant Marc Prensky in 2001, published in his essay "Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants." Prensky painted a vivid picture of a new generation, born into a world saturated with digital technology—computers, video games, the internet, mobile phones. He argued that these young people, having never known a world without instant connectivity and digital tools, think and process information fundamentally differently from "digital immigrants"—those who adopted technology later in life. His concept quickly resonated, becoming a foundational idea in discussions about education, workforce development, and the generational divide in the 21st century.
