The phrase "dumpster fire" vividly paints a picture of complete chaos and disaster, and its roots are surprisingly literal. A "Dumpster" was originally a trademarked name for a particular type of large industrial waste container, created by the Dempster Brothers, Inc. in the 1930s; the term soon became generic for any large rubbish bin. Fires within these massive metal containers, often ignited by carelessly discarded materials, are notoriously difficult to extinguish, spewing acrid smoke and presenting a scene of utter, uncontrolled destruction.
