Fandom

Origin

The word "fan" is a snappy abbreviation of "fanatic," appearing in the late 19th century to describe zealous followers, often of sports teams. But it wasn't until the early 20th century, as these passionate crowds solidified into distinct communities, that the suffix "-dom" (meaning realm or collective state, as in "kingdom") was grafted onto it, giving birth to "fandom." This new term perfectly captured the shared identity and collective enthusiasm of groups like early baseball supporters or silent film devotees. It truly found its stride, however, in the mid-20th century with the explosion of science fiction conventions and fanzines, establishing a vibrant, organized world for enthusiasts and cementing "fandom" in our lexicon.
