The phrase "fifth wheel" draws its vivid imagery from the world of horse-drawn carriages and, later, early automobiles. Originally, a "fifth wheel" was a crucial mechanical component: a horizontal wheel or coupling plate above the front axle, allowing the front wheels to pivot freely for steering. It was indispensable for navigating turns. However, the figurative meaning emerged from the simple, undeniable fact that a four-wheeled vehicle only needs four wheels to move. To possess an additional, unnecessary fifth wheel—beyond the one built for steering—would be cumbersome, serving no practical purpose, merely taking up space and adding weight.
