Furphy

Meaning

A furphy is a baseless rumor, a false story, or a piece of misleading information, often spread informally.

Origin

During World War I, Australian soldiers relied on water carts supplied by J. Furphy & Sons, a Victorian engineering firm. These distinctive tanks, boldly emblazoned with the 'Furphy' name, were central hubs in military camps, drawing soldiers for hydration and conversation. The cart drivers, positioned as natural purveyors of news, gossip, and often wild speculation, quickly became known for sharing all sorts of information—much of it exaggerated or outright false. Any unsubstantiated tale or baseless rumour soon became simply a 'furphy,' immortalizing the brand name as a term for unreliable information whispered among the ranks.

Examples

  • Don't believe that story about the new company policy; it's just a furphy spread by disgruntled employees.
