Origin
The term "G.I." itself emerged during World War I, short for "Government Issue," referring to equipment supplied to soldiers. By World War II, it had become a slang term for the soldiers themselves—a true "G.I." But the name truly exploded into pop culture in 1964 when Hasbro introduced the world to its groundbreaking action figure, "G.I. Joe." Marketed as "America's Movable Fighting Man," Joe quickly became a symbol of American military prowess and adventure, a patriotic hero in miniature who captivated generations and etched "G.I. Joe" permanently into the lexicon as more than just a soldier, but an icon.
