The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

Hitting the jackpot

Meaning

To achieve a sudden and spectacular success, often involving a significant financial gain or an exceptionally fortunate outcome.

Origin

The term "jackpot" emerged in the late 19th century, first making its mark in the world of poker. In a variant of Draw Poker, players couldn't open the betting unless they held a hand with at least a pair of jacks—hence, the "jackpot" hand. If no one had such a strong hand, the players would each ante up again, adding more money to the pot, making the prize grow progressively larger. When a player finally held the required hand and won this accumulated, ever-growing sum, they had literally "hit the jackpot." The phrase truly exploded into popular culture with the advent of slot machines in the early 20th century, where a specific, rare combination of symbols would trigger the largest payout, cementing its association with sudden, immense wealth.
