The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

Hocus pocus

Meaning

A nonsensical phrase used as a magical incantation or to describe something that appears to be magic or trickery.

Origin

Hocus pocus bursts onto the scene in the early 17th century, its origins murky but utterly captivating. The most popular theory traces its roots to a deliberate, mocking corruption of the Latin phrase "hoc est corpus meum"—"this is my body"—uttered by Catholic priests during the Eucharist. English Protestants, scornful of transubstantiation, supposedly twisted this sacred declaration into a nonsensical incantation of trickery and deceit. The phrase cemented its magical reputation around 1634 with the publication of "Hocus Pocus Junior: The Anatomie of Legerdemain," a popular book on conjuring. This book not only shared the secrets of magic but also gave the phrase its enduring association with illusionists, forever branding it as the ultimate pronouncement before a trick, a whispered prelude to the impossible.
