Origin
The word "Paradise" journeys to us from ancient Persia, where pairi-daēza referred to an enclosed garden or park. These were not just any gardens, but vast, meticulously designed royal hunting parks and pleasure grounds, often walled for protection and privacy. Think of lush landscapes, exotic trees, and flowing water—a true oasis in arid lands, a place of privilege and beauty. This Persian concept found its way into Greek as paradeisos and then into Latin as paradisus, eventually being adopted by the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible, to describe the Garden of Eden. From there, it became intrinsically linked with the mythical, perfect garden of God, a divine haven of untouched purity and eternal happiness, cementing its meaning as an ultimate, unattainable ideal.
