The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

Pleasure house

Meaning

An establishment, often clandestine, where people pay for sexual services and entertainment.

Origin

The concept of a dedicated establishment for sexual services is ancient, found in almost every civilization from Sumeria to ancient Rome, where they were known by various names like lupanar. As societies evolved, so too did the language used to describe these places. In English, direct terms like "brothel" or "bordello" existed, but during more prudish eras, particularly from the 17th and 18th centuries onwards, there was a societal inclination towards softer, more veiled language. "Pleasure house" emerged as a genteel euphemism, sidestepping the cruder reality by focusing on the "pleasure" aspect—however illicit—rather than the transaction or the specific act. It painted a picture of a luxurious retreat, a place of indulgence, rather than a mere commercial enterprise, even as its true function remained universally understood.
