Purple patch
Meaning
A purple patch is a period of exceptional success, good fortune, or high performance.
Origin
The phrase originates from the biting literary criticism of the Roman poet Horace in his Ars Poetica (Art of Poetry), penned around 19 BC. He chastised writers who would insert 'purple patches' (purpureus pannus) – dazzling, overly ornate descriptions of unrelated topics – into their work. While beautiful in isolation, these florid passages were like a gaudy purple cloth sewn onto an otherwise coherent garment, distracting and out of place. Over the centuries, as Latin faded, the phrase was reinterpreted, its 'purple' aspect, traditionally associated with royalty and excellence, eventually transforming the meaning from something ostentatious and ill-fitting into a period of exceptional brilliance or good fortune.
