Radio silence

Origin

In the early 20th century, as wireless telegraphy—radio—became a crucial tool in military operations, it also presented a vulnerability. Constant radio transmissions could be intercepted and triangulated by enemy forces, revealing troop positions and intentions. To counter this, commanders began to impose "radio silence"—a strict order for all units to cease transmitting, thereby cloaking their movements and intentions from the enemy. This critical military tactic, born out of the need for stealth and security, quickly entered the broader lexicon, evolving to describe any deliberate or unexpected period of no communication.
