Origin
The term "right-size" began its ascent in the late 20th century, especially from the 1980s onwards, as businesses sought a more positive and strategic-sounding alternative to the often negative connotations of "downsizing." While downsizing implied simple reduction, right-sizing aimed to convey a more thoughtful, analytical process of adjusting an organization's scale to its ideal state—whether that meant reducing staff, expanding certain departments, or reallocating resources. It was a linguistic pivot, an attempt to reframe what could be difficult organizational changes as calculated optimizations for efficiency and long-term health, rather than just cost-cutting measures.
