Imagine a bustling 19th-century market, the air thick with diverse smells. Among them, nothing signalled trouble quite like the unmistakable stench of rotting fish. Unrefrigerated, fish went from fresh catch to foul very quickly, its pungent, 'fishy' odor a glaring, undeniable sign that something was seriously wrong—the product was spoiled, deceitful, and potentially dangerous. This visceral experience, where a bad smell instantly revealed a hidden problem or outright deception, readily transferred to human affairs. Soon, any tale, alibi, or situation that just didn't smell right, that gave off a faint whiff of suspicion, was declared 'fishy,' warning everyone that not everything was as wholesome as it seemed.
