Technically, a "steep" learning curve originally meant rapid improvement – you quickly ascended to competence. However, the popular imagination seized on the visual metaphor of a steep hill or mountain. Climbing such a slope is undeniably arduous and demanding, requiring immense effort. This everyday image reinterpreted the phrase, shifting its meaning to signify a task that is initially very challenging and requires intense effort to master, effectively prioritizing the difficulty of the climb over the speed of advancement.
