The term "metaverse" was coined by science fiction author Neal Stephenson in his 1992 cyberpunk novel Snow Crash. In his dystopian world, characters escaped a bleak reality by immersing themselves in a vast, 3D virtual world where they could interact with each other as avatars. This visionary concept, born from the pages of a gritty novel, lay dormant in popular consciousness for decades, primarily residing within niche online gaming communities and early virtual worlds. It wasn't until the 2020s, fueled by advancements in virtual reality technology, cryptocurrency, and a global shift towards digital connection, that the idea burst into mainstream awareness.
