Origin
Timbuktu, a city in present-day Mali, was once a thriving center of trade, scholarship, and Islamic learning from the 13th to the 16th centuries. It sat at the crossroads of trans-Saharan trade routes, becoming incredibly wealthy and renowned for its gold, salt, and manuscripts. For Europeans, however, Timbuktu remained largely legendary and unvisited for centuries, shrouded in mystery and danger across vast deserts. Its immense distance and the difficulty of reaching it from European centers solidified its reputation as the ultimate faraway destination, a place so remote it existed almost outside the known world. This geographical inaccessibility and mystique cemented its place in the English lexicon as a byword for any extremely distant or exotic locale.
