The phrase "touch a raw nerve" originates from the literal, agonizing sensation of a nerve ending that has been exposed or damaged. In the human body, nerves are protected by skin, muscle, and bone; when this protection is lost, such as in an injury or dental procedure where a nerve is exposed, even the gentlest contact can trigger intense, throbbing pain. This vivid physical experience was then extended metaphorically in the 19th century to describe the act of inadvertently or intentionally bringing up a topic so sensitive or painful to someone that it elicits an immediate and strong emotional reaction, just like touching an unprotected nerve causes a sharp, involuntary physical response.
