The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

Washed my hands of it

Meaning

To disclaim all responsibility or involvement in a situation or matter.

Origin

The phrase's enduring power stems from a dramatic scene in the New Testament. Before condemning Jesus to crucifixion, the Roman governor Pontius Pilate publicly called for water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and declared, "I am innocent of this man's blood. It is your responsibility!" This symbolic act was a traditional Jewish custom to signify innocence or purification from guilt. Pilate’s gesture, recorded in the Gospel of Matthew, became a powerful and lasting metaphor for publicly disclaiming all responsibility for an outcome, transferring the blame, or completely dissociating oneself from a difficult or morally compromised situation.
