Origin

In ancient times, particularly within religious traditions, the concept of sacrifice was central to seeking divine favor. To be acceptable to the gods, an offering—often an animal like a lamb or a dove—had to be utterly perfect. Any physical imperfection, any spot, scar, or deformity, would render the sacrifice impure and thus unacceptable. Priests would meticulously inspect each animal, ensuring it was "without a blemish," a literal demand for physical perfection. This stringent requirement for a pristine offering carried over into general language, evolving into a powerful metaphor for anything deemed flawless, pure, or unmarred, long after the altars were cold.
