The meaning and origin of interesting English phrases

Goober

Meaning

A slang term for a silly or foolish person, or an informal name for a peanut.

Origin

The story of "goober" begins far from American soil, in the sun-baked fields of West Africa. Enslaved Africans, forcibly brought to the American South, carried with them not only their culture but also their languages and crops. Among these was the humble peanut, which they knew by names like "nguba" in Kikongo or "guber" in other regional tongues. These West African words for groundnut quickly took root in the lexicon of the American South, becoming "goober" as a common, affectionate term for the beloved legume. It wasn't until the early 20th century that the word expanded its meaning, branching out from the food item to become a lighthearted, often teasing, label for a silly or foolish person, a playful twist perhaps on the simplicity of its namesake.

Examples

  • Don't be such a goober, pay attention to what I'm saying!
