Origin

During the long, arduous voyages of 19th-century sailing ships, one of the most common rations for sailors was tough, cured animal fat or salted beef. This food was notoriously difficult to chew, often requiring extended, vigorous effort to break down. As sailors sat together during their watches or downtime, they would laboriously chew their rations, a process that naturally lent itself to lengthy, idle conversation and storytelling. This shared act of prolonged, tough chewing while chatting eventually became a vivid metaphor for spending time together in casual, unhurried conversation, associating the physical act of "chewing the fat" with the social act of passing the time in talk.
